WHAT DOES BAREFOOT SHOES FOR RUNNING MEAN?

New to barefoot shoes. We are now living in Montana in which it will get to -20 or decreased. Any ideas on boots? Am I right in imagining you'd need to have the thick boot to shield from the intense chilly? Hunt for boots with a broad toe box maybe?
